Market Insight

  • Sri Lanka has been an agriculture economy like India and relay heavily on agriculture and agro based food processing industries. However due to limited land area, agriculture sector is not very diversified and due to which all the food crops are not grown in the country.
  • This in turns creates the dependence of Sri Lanka on processed food imports. To a large extent the food technology – processing & packaging requirements and agriculture inputs, chemicals, technology and cold storage systems are imported by the country due to lack of indigenous engineering capability.
  • Sri Lanka has been a very good and old trading partner to India and major imports of Sri Lanka from India comprise of Mineral fuels & allied products, engineering & machinery of food processing, cold storage & refrigeration, pumps & motors, agriculture machinery tools and accessories etc., Cereals – especially Rice, Processed Food and Beverages, Confectionery and Bakery, textiles and Pharma etc.
  • India has traditionally been among Sri Lanka’s largest trade partners and Sri Lanka remains among the largest trade partners of India in the SAARC. In 2020, India was Sri Lanka’s 2nd largest trading partner with the bilateral merchandise trade amounting to about USD $ 3.6 billion. It is observed that Indian business has good scope in the market especially in sectors like agriculture implements, technology, food processing technology and packaging material ad machinery, processed food segments & high end cereals, metals based industries etc. which are indeed the most imported items of the Sri Lanka and domestic production is almost nil.
  • Also keeping in the view that Chinese products are slowly getting avoided by the world due to its shorter life span and viability and Sri Lanka also following the path, it is real time opportunity for the Indian engineering industry to supply and grab the market in potential segments and markets, especially like Sri Lanka.
