Illness to Wellness - Non-Communicable Diseases: "The New Health Challenges For Odisha"

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide. In India, NCDs burden is growing at an alarming rate. There are empirical studies depicting that air pollution is one of the biggest contributors for rising cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity as well as with issues pertaining to digestive tract, and heart in urban India. This has come to the fore during the pandemic. The mortality rate among those suffering from NCD's has been recorded at 60 per cent during the pandemic. These studies further highlight that two-third Indians with non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) & heart strokes are highly prevalent in the age group of 26 to 59 years. Furthermore, diabetes & hypertension are more prevalent among people above 35 years of age. Lifestyle or behaviour risk is the topmost factors followed by hereditary characteristics, and rest is environmental exposure or occupational factors associated with an increase occurrence of a particular disease or other health conditions.

The prevalence of NCDs is alarmingly higher than the national average in some specific regions of India including, Odisha. The paramount objectives of this programs are to prevent, control, and manage such critical NCDs through cascading public awareness about early diagnosis and adopting healthy lifestyle changes, and eventually to address the healthcare issues concerning prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of such non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
