  • 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide. In India, NCDs burden is growing at an alarming rate. There are empirical studies depicting that air pollution is one of the biggest contributors for rising cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity as well as with issues pertaining to digestive tract, and heart in urban India. This has come to the fore during the pandemic. The mortality rate among those suffering from NCD`s has been recorded at 60 per cent during the pandemic. These studies further highlightthat two-third Indians with non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) & heart strokes are highly prevalent inthe age group of 26 to 59 years. Furthermore, diabetes & hypertension are more prevalent among people above 35 years of age. Lifestyle or behaviour risk is the topmost factors followed by hereditary characteristics, and rest is environmental exposure or occupational factors associated with an increase occurrence of a particular diseaseor other health conditions.

The prevalence of NCDs is quite higher than the national average in some specific regions of India including,West Bengal.
