6th Conference on Empowering Persons with Disabilities through Accessible & Assistive Technology

  • 09 Jul, 2024

The Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) constitute a valuable human resource for the nation, and they can lead a better quality of life if they have equal opportunities and effective access to rehabilitation measures. It is important to create an environment that provide them equal opportunities for protection of their rights and full participation in society.

As per census 2011, in India out of the 121 Cr population, 2.68 Cr are persons with disability, which is 2.21% of the total population of whom majority are unemployed or underemployed.

Inclusion for PwDs in the workplace is crucial, for their financial independence and dignity. Assistive technologies play a vital role in facilitating their integration in the workforce by providing equitable access to employment opportunities.

Aligned with this vision, 'Vision Viksit Bharat@2047', introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to foster opportunities, and empower persons with disabilities (PwDs) to realize their potential and live a productive and dignified life.

This initiative accords with The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, which endeavours to ensure their holistic development, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons.

However, various significant challenges exist regarding accessibility, affordability, market influences, and other factors that must be addressed to maximize the potential of all stakeholders.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) and assistive technologies holds the promise of fostering a more inclusive ecosystem. These technologies have the potential to mitigate barriers in the workplace and can help the seamless integration of PwDs into mainstream social and economic spheres.
